Our Story
A Centre Built Around Everyday Needs
We started Lantern Row because too many households in KL were managing important records and decisions without a clear place to go for structured, unbiased support.
Back to HomeHow Lantern Row Began
Lantern Row opened in 2019 at Maju Junction Mall on Jalan Sultan Ismail — a location chosen specifically because it sits at a junction that thousands of KL residents pass through each week. The founders, a small team with backgrounds in community development and adult education, saw a consistent gap: people who understood their situation perfectly well but didn't have the tools, templates, or structured time to act on it.
The first service we offered was the budget basics workshop, running on Saturday mornings with groups of eight to ten neighbours sitting around a table with printed workbooks. Word spread through residents' associations and WhatsApp groups. By 2021 we added the home filing setup, responding to repeated requests from workshop participants who wanted help sorting the documents they'd identified as important during the budgeting session.
The community operations advisory came later, after several residents' committees who'd attended our workshops asked for help applying the same plain-language, structured approach to how their organisations ran their front desks and outreach work. Today all three services run alongside each other, each one designed to be self-contained and practical from the first session.
Our Mission
To give households and community organisations in Malaysia the practical tools, structured time, and plain-language support they need to handle everyday administrative matters with more confidence and less stress.
What We Stand For
We don't sell products, make recommendations about external providers, or give regulated advice. What we offer is time, structure, printed materials, and people who explain things clearly — in the language that works for you.
Walk-In First
There is no obligation at the door. If you're unsure whether any of our services fits your situation, walk in during opening hours and speak with a staff member. The first conversation is always free.
The Team at the Centre
Small enough that you'll recognise faces on your second visit; experienced enough to keep sessions moving and useful.
Nurul Ain Ramli
Centre Manager
Oversees all three service streams and handles community advisory engagements. Spent eight years in adult learning coordination before joining Lantern Row in 2020.
Kelvin Tan Wei Ming
Workshop Facilitator
Runs the weekend budget workshops and handles the spreadsheet and workbook materials. Speaks English, Mandarin, and Bahasa Malaysia with equal comfort in the room.
Suraya binti Fadzil
Records & Filing Specialist
Leads the home filing setup visits and designs the folder systems and renewal calendars. Her background is in document management for a property firm, where she did this at scale for years.
How We Keep Standards Consistent
Every session, every visit, every playbook goes through the same preparation process — so the experience is predictable and the materials are actually useful.
Materials Reviewed Quarterly
Workbooks, folder labels, and template documents are reviewed every three months. When MyKad renewal periods, utility rate structures, or road tax windows change, our materials change with them.
Data Handled with Care
During filing setup visits we handle household documents carefully. We never retain copies of personal documents and we don't photograph anything without the household's agreement at the start of the visit.
Staff Trained Before Client Delivery
New staff observe at least four full sessions before running one independently. Facilitators and filing specialists complete an internal competency check before they lead client-facing work.
Feedback After Every Session
Participants receive a short feedback form at the end of each workshop or visit. We read every response and use them to update content, clarify explanations, and improve pacing.
Language Matching for Sessions
When participants book, we ask about language preference. We aim to have at least one staff member in each session who is fully fluent in the participant's preferred language.
No Product Tie-Ins
We have no commercial partnerships with banks, insurers, or financial product providers. What we teach in workshops and what we recommend in advisory work is driven entirely by what is straightforward and practical.
Practical Assistance in Kuala Lumpur
Lantern Row sits at Level 8 of Maju Junction Mall, a central Kuala Lumpur location within walking distance of Chow Kit LRT and a short drive from Chow Kit, Brickfields, and the city centre residential zones. Participants come from across the Klang Valley — some from as far as Shah Alam or Ampang — because the centre is accessible by public transport and the sessions are scheduled around working hours.
The household budget workshop focuses on building habits rather than presenting a single correct system. Different households have different income patterns — salary, daily trade income, rental, or a combination — and the session explores how a simple tracking approach adapts to each situation. The spreadsheet template provided works on a smartphone, a tablet, or a desktop, with no subscription or account required to use it.
Home filing setup is particularly useful for households where documents have accumulated over the years without a consistent storage system. The two-visit structure allows time to sort through everything at the first session without rushing, and then to set up the digital backup and renewal calendar at the second visit once the physical system is in place. Carers and elderly households often find this service the most immediately useful.
Community operations advisory is designed for organisations that are doing good work but spending too much time on internal coordination problems — duplicate enquiry logs, volunteers unsure of their rotas, or management committees without a consistent reporting format. The eight-week engagement is structured so that each week builds on the previous one, ending with a written playbook that remains useful after our engagement closes.
All sessions take place in English, Bahasa Malaysia, or Mandarin, with staff available across these languages on a regular basis. Printed materials are produced in English and Bahasa Malaysia as standard, with Mandarin versions available on request for some documents.
